The Great Migration is an annual movement of millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles in the Serengeti ecosystem of East Africa. It is one of the most spectacular wildlife events on earth and attracts thousands of tourists to witness it every year.
The migration is a natural phenomenon that occurs in response to seasonal changes in rainfall and grass growth. It is a cycle that repeats itself year after year, with the animals following the same general pattern.
The migration begins in the southern Serengeti in Tanzania, typically in December or January, where the herds give birth to their young. As the rainy season ends and the grasses begin to dry up, the herds start moving northwards in search of better grazing.

By April or May, the animals have reached the central Serengeti and begin crossing the Grumeti River. This is a treacherous part of the migration, as crocodiles lie in wait for the unsuspecting animals.
The herds continue moving northwards, crossing the Mara River into Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve in July or August, where they remain until October or November. The Mara River crossings are one of the most dramatic events of the migration, as the wildebeest and zebras plunge into the water, sometimes causing a stampede.
As the rains start to return to the southern Serengeti, the herds begin their journey back southwards, completing the circle of life.
Both a jeep and a hot air balloon offer unique ways to witness the Great Migration in the Serengeti.
A jeep safari allows you to get up close to the action, driving through the herds and watching the animals from a safe distance. You can follow the migration as it moves across the vast savannah, observing the different behaviors and interactions of the animals. Jeep safaris also provide an opportunity to spot other wildlife, such as elephants, giraffes, and predators like lions and cheetahs.
A hot air balloon ride, on the other hand, offers a bird’s eye view of the migration. From high up in the sky, you can see the vast expanse of the Serengeti and the enormous herds of animals moving across the landscape.
Both jeep safaris and hot air balloon rides offer unique perspectives on the Great Migration, and it’s up to personal preference which option to choose. Some people even choose to do both to get the best of both worlds.
